I met Yvonne, aka @sixat21, the queen of rustic style with a touch of boho, on Instagram a couple of years ago, and since then, I’m following her page, which, I have to say, is pretty incredible. Many of you probably know; I lived in Ireland for 7 years, so part of my heart belongs to the Emerald Isle. I love Irish people, their friendliness, their humour.
Yvonne is married to Kevin. They have four girls, and they live in a lovely cottage in a village by the sea on the east coast of Ireland. She developed her love of upcycling from watching her aunt Lucille who loved upcycling old furniture in her unique home. Her dad can turn his hand to anything and is very artistic, too, so she gets her creativity from him.

Can you remember your first design project in your home?
Yvonne: Before we even moved into the cottage, our first project was to take down the old suspended ceiling in the living room to expose the original vaulted ceiling underneath. We put in a skylight to add plenty of light to this otherwise very dark room.
What is your favourite Instagram page on design?
Yvonne: I absolutely adore Jellina’s @jellinadetmar home and interiors, and if I could live anywhere, it would be in a house very similar in size and design to Jellina’s.

What inspires you?
Yvonne: I’m inspired by nature and always have been. I’ve always loved sketching and painting in fields beside our house when our girls were small, but I don’t get the time now. Hence, I feel I subconsciously incorporate nature into our home with plants and colour and use as many natural materials as possible.
What’s the favourite part of your home?
Yvonne: My favourite room used to be my kitchen, and I’ve always wanted a rustic kitchen with an old wooden table and chairs, an old dresser and stools and open-faced units. Since redecorating our bedroom with muted and subdued tones and shades, I love spending time in this beach-inspired room.

Can you describe your style?
Yvonne: My style is definitely a mix of rustic interiors with a touch of boho. I love creating a relaxing atmosphere by highlighting the use of wood, stone and other organic elements and creating as natural space as possible by layering rugs, woven blankets, reclaimed pieces and wood that are essential to the rustic style with wooden furniture and wooden panelled walls.
The boho vibes can be seen around our home with comfortable, relaxed pieces like wicker and bamboo chairs to large pallet wood bed, fringe, crochet, and macramé pillows and wall hangings with throw-rugs and floor pillows.
How does your family relate to your passion for design? Do they support it?
Yvonne: My family have always supported my love of all things old, vintage and salvaged and my love of upcycling and repurposing furniture too. There’s a story of my girls and I taking kitchen chairs from a skip and running down the road with them and sitting on them on our way home to catch our breath!
I know you are a colour lover, but what’s your favourite?
Yvonne: My favourite colour has to be green with browns and rust. Combining these colours and putting plants around our home, using natural and wooden elements and letting lots of light into a room, create a feeling of being outdoors.

What was your design faux pas you did?
Yvonne: I don’t think I’ve any. I did have a love of red accessories about 16 years ago, which I wouldn’t like to recreate again.
Do you have a favourite designer (or more)?
Yvonne: I’ve dozens of books on rustic interiors, more than anything from the likes of Lauren Liess, Niki Brantmark, Emily Henson, and Natalie Walton, to name a few.
Is there any design style you don’t like and why?
Yvonne: I appreciate all interior designs. Although I love scrolling through images of minimalist interiors, I would find it hard to live in a minimalist home as I love my things around me.

A huge thank you to Yvonne for this interview. I’m so happy that I met many talented, strong, gorgeous women during my Instagram journey. It’s not only about followers, numbers but the people who we meet and like. We may live a thousand miles away from each other, on the other side of the planet, but we are friends who support each other. 💖
