Have you ever felt like you don’t fit in with everyone else, but you are driven make the world a better place? You might be genetically engineered to do just that. Kelly, aka @kellysiegelart, is one of these people and artists. Her goal is to paint artworks that bring happiness to people.
She is an abstract artist, art biz owner, homeschooling mama to a 5-year-old girl. She enjoys winter sabbaticals in Costa Rica. She struggled with an eating disorder 8-10 years ago and returning to art saved her life.

Why do you do what you do?
Kelly: I do what I do because I have to. I feel as if I can’t stop; it’s divinely written. My soul must paint.
What work do you most enjoying doing?
Kelly: Hands down-abstract, it’s the most freeing. I’m a type-A, but in the studio, I prefer to be primarily in divine feminine energy, with a little masculine energy in the fine-tuning stages.
What food, drink, song inspires you?
Kelly: Any food that has a variety of colours and textures. A variety of music depending on the mood, love reggae, but definitely prefer slow music or upbeat.
My inspiration comes from nature, design, artists that have a fun, whimsical style and break the traditional rules and of course life—the ups, downs, feelings, lessons.

What do you like about your work?
Kelly: I love my use of vibrant colours alongside muted colours and contrasting textures as well.
My work is layered and process-based, without a rigid plan or a pre-determined outcome, other than a colour scheme.
This way of working keeps me engaged in the act of creating, with my hand responding to my own previous marks or the “happy accidents” that occur from the interplay of the materials. I hate having a “plan” which is ironic because, in my everyday life, I love structure. In the studio, however, too much structure is stifling. The studio is my place to practice flow, trust, following my desires and intuition.
What do you dislike about your work?
Kelly: That sometimes, the outcome isn’t what I intended, but sometimes that’s a good thing.
Do you have a favourite artist (or more)?
Kelly: My favourite artists are Alena Hennessy, Kirsten Jackson and Cristina Baker.
What is your dream project?
Kelly: My dream project is a commission project for Anthropologie doing large works.
