Let me introduce you to one of my lovely IG friends, Paola Roder – aka @paolaroderdesigns – an incredible and inspiring lady. Her home is so fantastic, bursting with colours, shapes and life. Her life and story are as colourful as her home.
Paola is a Graphic Designer from Cali, Colombia. She studied and graduated from an Arts Conservatory, where she got her degree as a Graphic Designer. She worked at an advertising agency for 14 years as a Senior Graphic Designer designing different types of campaigns, billboards, packaging.
Before becoming a Graphic Designer, she worked as a personal assistant for Nancy Gonzalez, a prominent Fashion Designer from her country who shares a workspace with other talented designers such as Gucci, Fendi etc.
Once she moved to the states, she stopped working in the designer world to dedicate her time to another one of her passions: dogs. Then 2 years ago, one of their dogs got severely ill, and he needed 24/7 attention, so she started using her home as a canvas and sharing her passion for colours and design on Instagram.
Can you remember your first design project in your home?
Paola: Yes. The very first thing I did was the Rock and Roll Wall and the 2 rainbow murals on the side of that wall. The Record Wall was created with small records that I found on an old suitcase in a basement and pictures of famous singers I collected from the post office stamps musical series.
What is your favourite Instagram page on design?
Paola: I love the feed of @quirkandrescue. They are also graphic designers, and their designs are very unique and absolutely mind-blowing. @eviekemp is another favourite her use of colour and patterns is like no other. I love @amyexton her designs inspired me when I did master bedroom makeover; they are like no other. Her designs are on the book called: Be Bold: Interiors for the Brave of Heart!
What inspires you?
Paola: Music and movies aesthetic. I have always been in love with Pedro Almodovar Movie Sets. They are bold, colourful and quirky. I also love the impeccable aesthetic of Wes Anderson.
What’s the favourite part of your home?
Paola: High ceilings and ceiling to floor windows.
Can you describe your style?
Paola: Bold, fearless, quirky, kitsch. I base my designs on primary colours, and I balanced them out with Black and white patterns and colours.
How does your family relate to your passion for design? Do they support it?
Paola: My husband is very supportive of it. Usually, before starting a project, I do a mock-up of the space with the colours an elements I’m going to use and share it with him.
I know you are a colour lover, but what’s your favourite?
Paola: Maybe red. Red is the colour that you see the most in my designs. Ironically, my 2 absolute favourites have to be black and white; they help me balance out all the colours I use.
What was your design faux pas you did?
Paola: I’m always making mistakes but try to make the most out of them and learn from them.
Do you have a favourite designer (or more)?
Paola: As I mention before I’m in Love with Amy Exton designs and also love any indie designers and their trends, they tend to be unique.
Is there any design style you don’t like and why?
Paola: I don’t like Farm Magnolia Joanna Gaines style or boho without a soul, meaning with a lack of colours. For me, whatever style you choose to follow needs to have that soul and personal staple.
A huge thank you for Paola for this interview. I’m so happy that I met many talented, strong, gorgeous women during my Instagram journey. It’s not only about followers, numbers but the people who we meet and like. We may live a thousand miles away from each other, on the other side of the planet, but we are friends who support each other. 💖
