I love Kim Laplante’s colourful home, and I know her for a while in the Insta world. She is the designer behind “Dig and Hang” @digandhand. She features bold and colourful home decor and art and DIY projects to make any space colourful and filled with joy. She has been decorating and making art since she was a little girl. Most kids would spend their time playing sports, video games, but she spent her time redecorating her half of the bedroom she shared with her sister. Luckily, both her sister and Kim love bold colour and funky design, haha.
Kim’s loved crafting as long as she’s loved decorating and gardening. She’s always gravitated toward mixed media recycled art and fabric art mostly because they are so unique looking and add such colour and texture to a space.
Can you remember your first design project in your home?
Kim: I don’t really remember just one; decorating is like breathing to me; I just do it without thinking about it, so over my lifetime, it’s become an everyday part of my life.

What is your favourite Instagram page on design?
Kim: I love @mango_manor. I know Kelli’s style is way more beach boho, but I love the playfulness and colour; she is also a wonderful mom and a genuine person.
What inspires you?
Kim: Travel and going to the thrift store and my recycled material collective in Nashville. I go every Sunday afternoon; it is my happy place, and the one time of the week, I get a few hours away from my husband and daughter to refresh and spend time looking at materials and dreaming up new things I could create with them. I’d have to say that is what I do best; I can take anything and make it a piece of art; I enjoy it so much because it has the ability to delight, take people out of their element and be playful.
What’s the favourite part of your home?
Kim: My backyard; I love being outside and love nature. We are just starting to work in the yard as the past year was our first year in our new home. The inside is mainly done, so now we are focused on the outside. We have big plants to make a rainbow shade, and lounge area in the backyard and in the front a rainbow veggie and berry garden. It will be filled with lots of rainbow art pieces I make, along with hammocks, beautiful smelling flowers, gnomes and good food, as we have a woodfire oven back there too!

Can you describe your style?
Kim: Bold, funky, colourful and playful; if someone tells me something can’t be art, I do it and show them otherwise; if someone tells me I can’t decorate with a certain thing, I do it anyway, haha. Your home should express what you love and what brings you joy, not what everyone else feels you should do.
How does your family relate to your passion for design? Do they support it?
Kim: I have been blessed to be in a family that is fully supportive of it, my parents were not much into design or art, but they were very supportive of my sister and me, who were. I am also so thankful for my supportive husband, Dave, who always encourages me to experiment and grow in my art and design. He loves how funky and unique our home has become.
I know you are a colour lover, but what’s your favourite?
Kim: I’ve always loved neon green; it just feels like pure energy; my favourite combo is neon green, neon orange and neon yellow. I guess you could say go bold or go home with me, lol.

What was your design faux pas you did?
Kim: I’m sure I have committed a ton of them, but don’t really have any off the top of my head; in my thirties, I’ve learned to not care about what others think and just do what makes me happen design-wise, life’s been much better since then!
Do you have a favourite designer (or more)?
Kim: I don’t really follow designers at all; I more so jump around inspirations of travel or random things I find at thrift stores or on the side of the road.

Is there any design style you don’t like and why?
Kim: I can’t stand all neutral designs, like all white, or tans, greys, blacks. It’s so boring to me. I also don’t like minimalism. It drives me nuts when there are too many patterns in a space; that’s a big reason why I intend on always having white walls, the colours pop better, and it’s not claustrophobic to me.
A huge thank you to Kim for this interview. I’m so happy that I met many talented, strong, gorgeous women during my Instagram journey. It’s not only about followers, numbers but the people who we meet and like. We may live a thousand miles away from each other, on the other side of the planet, but we are friends who support each other. 💖
