Kim, the queen of modern vintage and maximalism

Kim, aka @miss_mustard_design, is definitely the queen of modern vintage and colourful maximalism. Both Kim and her partner Mark have always been into property development and have their own property development company, @kimberley_developments.
Recently about 2 years ago, she has had a massive career change. She has always worked in the hair and beauty industry and had successful salons. However, after having her extremely premature baby 2 years ago, she decided life was too short and followed her dreams!
So she took a massive chance and came out of the business and let all her solid client base go that she has built up over the years. Kim enrolled on an interior design degree as a mature student as, for a year, people had been telling her this is what she should be doing! So here she is about to start the final year of her degree and absolutely loving it!

Can you remember your first design project in your home?

Kim: We have recently renovated our new Victorian home that we got the keys to in August last year and moved in the following November, doing the full renovation top to bottom in just 10 weeks! I love sharing my love for design and interiors on my Instagram page and have met some fantastic people in the industry along the way!

What inspires you?

Kim: To be honest, anything and everything inspires me. I go off my own inner colourful personality of what I love and what makes me happy and go with it! Since being a child down to bedroom shuffling, I’ve always had a passion for creativity and design.
What’s the favourite part of your home?

Kim: I absolutely love all of our home as each room has its own vibrance and feel, but if I was to choose one, it would be the entrance hall as it gave us the wow factor when we came to look around, and it was the entrance hall that sold the house to us! It was screaming potential just needed some love and life injecting back into it as it was very dated! So I went wild and went for the orange and disco balls!

Can you describe your style?

Kim: As a designer, I would describe my style as a colour enthusiast with a love for maximalism, pattern clashing modern vintage.

How does your family relate to your passion for design? Do they support it?

Kim: I have such a supportive family with a love for colour and design. My husband manages the budget, and I enjoy spending it! My children live amongst colour in our fun family home, and our home portrays our families personality and love.

I know you are a colour lover, but what’s your favourite?

Kim: I really can’t choose my favourite colour as each colour and shade evokes different emotions depending on the space and atmosphere and other colours amongst it within the palette. I just have love for all colour! Brights and at the moment orange as our hallway seems to be very popular to the eye of the Insta world!

Do you have a favourite designer?Β 

Kim: Ben Kelly has always been a favourite of mine. His bold colour combinations and sharp angles of contrasting stripes are always an inspiration.

Is there any design style you don’t like and why?

Kim: Personally, I’m not particularly fond of minimalist grey and neutral interiors. That’s not to say there is anything wrong with that design style; it’s just not something I would personally choose. There is always a place and person for that style, and if that’s what makes that person happy, then that’s all that matters.

It’s important to style your home in what you love and what makes you happy and not be influenced by others as it will only make you dislike it and be unhappy in the long run.
