Martine – aka @the_spotted_zebra – the queen of boho, quirky, eclectic maximalism lives in Rural Queensland, Australia, with her husband David, and we have two children Maddison 28 and Mitchell, 25 years. They bought their land in 1989 and built their home in 1990, and got married in 1991.
In 1992 they experienced their first bush fire and hopefully their last. (very scary). She loves the tropical look, which they have done their gardens to suit. She has worked mainly in the jewellery industry, one of her main duties was to do displays, and she’s still doing them.

Can you remember your first design project in your home?
Martine: My first design project was the country style, then I changed it to Shabby chic, then to French provincial. I found that I needed more colour and loved the boho look, and it took off from there.
What is your favourite Instagram page on design?
Martine: I don’t have a favourite Instagram page cause I love them all. Everyone that I follow has beautiful homes, and I love the uniqueness of each.
What inspires you?
Martine: Colour inspires me as well as textures and patterns. I have over 100 cushion covers, lol. Changing up a room can be expensive, but cushions are an affordable way.

What’s the favourite part of your home?
Martine: My favourite part of my home would have to be our verandah. It’s really pretty at night.
Can you describe your style?
Martine: I would call my style boho, quirky and eclectic and, of course, maximalist, haha.
How does your family relate to your passion for design? Do they support it?
Martine: Yes, my family support my colour choices and design, except my son didn’t like it when I painted the antique sideboard green.
I know you are a colour lover, but what’s your favourite?
Martine: My favourite colour would have to be turquoise green.

What was your design faux pas you did?
Martine: I think it was painting my Buddha water feature. It was painted 3 colours before I settled on the antique gold.
Do you have a favourite designer (or more)?
Martine: I can’t say I do cause I like so many.
Is there any design style you don’t like and why?
Martine: There isn’t a style I don’t like, but sometimes if I see a minimalist home, my first thought is where is all their stuff, haha.

A huge thank you to Martine for this interview. I’m so happy that I met many talented, strong, gorgeous women during my Instagram journey. It’s not only about followers, numbers but the people who we meet and like. We may live a thousand miles away from each other, on the other side of the planet, but we are friends who support each other. 💖
