I’ve met so many incredible women/designer/homemaker on Instagram from all around the world. We never met in person, but it feels like I know them forever. It’s such an incredible feeling to be in touch with them day-by-day.
We are all mothers/grandmothers/wives, but there’s one thing that connects us. The love of bohemian/boho interior design, colours and positive thinking.
This is how our story began with Patti. I got a DM in February in 2019 from Canada, from Patti aka @pattipeetzinteriors. Since then, I’m following Patti’s path in the world of colourful, boho design, and I love what she is doing. That’s why I asked her to have an interview with me.
Can you please tell me about yourself, Patti?
Patti: I am a 56-year-old mother of four and grandmother of three. My husband and I purchased our home 20 years ago with the intention of renovating and flipping our home. As we started that journey, we slowly became attached to our home and neighbourhood. We never did leave that house.
I’ve always had a love for vintage and antiques. I’m an avid thrifter and always have been and currently, I’m a huge fan of MCM furnishings.
I work as a decorator/designer with my husbands contracting /construction company. He does the physical work, and I pick all the design elements. I love my work. It never truly feels like work because I am so passionate about it.
I discovered my inner artist two years ago after taking some art lessons. I’ve even sold a few pieces and now have a small Etsy account where I putter with art and sell a bit.

Can you remember your first design project in your home?
Patti: My first design project in our home was our 1500 square ft addition. We live in a 160-year-old century home – so much character in these old homes. Our home has been featured on our towns Christmas tour. Over 700 people purchased tickets for this tour, and our home was one of seven homes featured. We’ve also had quite a few made for TV movies filmed in our home.
What is your favourite Instagram page on design?
Patti: One of my favourite pages on Instagram would be difficult to choose. But I’m going to have to say Sofia @beautifybysofia and Paola @paolaroderdesigns. I can’t choose between the two. I connected with these two ladies and their homes, and it was an instant bond and connection. Paola and I both boarded a plane. Mine from Toronto Canada and Paola from Atlanta Georgia to Sofia’s amazing home in Chicago and spent the weekend there and many laughs and food and drink and plan to eventually do this at each home. I love these ladies and feel very close to them, all from this little app.

What inspires you?
Patti: Colour inspires “a me free to be me” style. Being true toy self and doing what makes me happy and not seeking the approval of others. A little controversy is a real thrill for me. The fact that not everyone’s going to like it makes me like it even more. Hey if they’re going to talk about your decor, they’re going to remember it.
What’s the favourite part of your home?
Patti: My favourite part of my home is most definitely my rainbow staircase and Sharpie mural. Each took an afternoon or two. Not a lot of though. A bit of music and complete satisfaction.

Can you describe your style?
Patti: That’s simple. I’m going to quote a local blogger who featured my home. They said: “Frida meet Lichtenstein meets Betsy Johnson”.
How does your family relate to your passion for design? Do they support it?
Patti: When I first introduced colour to our home my family thought there she goes putting her touch on it and then I pushed the envelope even further and added more colour and art and my own flare and now they are living it, and they don’t question anything I do. Funny enough, my kids are all pretty artistic, but my youngest loves all white on white. She’s a minimalist. I wonder if I’m part of the reason. All and all, although the opposite to me she still has great taste.
I know you are a colour lover, but what’s your favourite?
Patti: True. I am most definitely a colour lover. My most favourite colour is turquoise blue with bright yellow being a close second.

What was your design faux pas you did?
Patti: I really can’t think of a design faux pas. Maybe a few bad furniture choices. My spaces are always evolving. Even if I don’t like one aspect of it, I love the challenge of making it work and bringing in things and colours to compliment it. Something you dislike can send you in a different direction and making into something beautiful. Kind of like the ugly duckling becoming the beautiful swan.
Do you have a favourite designer (or more)?
Patti: My favourite designer/architect is Frank Lloyd Wright and a bit of Andy Warhol and anything boho.
Is there any design style you don’t like and why?
Patti: I’m honestly open-minded and like almost every style. My heart currently belongs to Mid Century Modern design and pop art with a touch of eclectic boho. A little bit of everything. Nothing too traditional. Traditional is boring to me. I even have to say that although aim a maximalist sometimes I do appreciate ate a minimalist and love a classic black and white decor. I swoon over Gladys @thegladystay.

As Julian Ovenden once said:
What I enjoy is collaboration. Working with other like-minded people. People who have brilliant minds and big hearts.
That’s how I feel about Patti too. Thank you for the interview, Patti! You are awesome!
